Vilanova i la Geltrú is the capital of the Garraf and, paradoxically, one of the least-known beach destinations on the Catalan coast among international tourists. While Sitges gets all the attention, Vilanova offers something Sitges can no longer guarantee: tranquillity, authenticity and reasonable prices, just 40 minutes by train from Barcelona.

How to get there from Barcelona

The Rodalies R2 Sud train connects Passeig de Gràcia station with Vilanova i la Geltrú in 42 minutes. Trains run every 30 minutes at peak times and every hour off-peak. The ticket price is €4.60 with T-Casual or similar. From Vilanova station, the centre and beaches are less than 10 minutes on foot.

Vilanova's beaches: quiet and fully serviced

Vilanova has 5 km of coastline with three main beaches. Ribes Roges is the most family-friendly, with calm waters and a play area. Platja d'Arròs is the most extensive, with a Blue Flag and all services. Sant Gervasi, next to the marina, is the quietest and most frequented by locals. Unlike Sitges, finding a spot on the beach in July without arriving at 8:00 is perfectly possible in Vilanova.

The marina: the heart of Vilanova

Vilanova's marina is one of the most active on the Catalan Mediterranean. It combines a fishing port with a century-old tradition, a sailing marina with more than 700 berths and a fresh fish restaurant area that is the most authentic gastronomic destination in the region. Vilanova's fish market is one of the most important in Catalonia and the fish served in the port restaurants has been out of the water for just a few hours.

What to do in Vilanova beyond the beach

• Museu del Ferrocarril: one of the most important railway museums in Spain, with original 19th-century steam locomotives.
• Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer: an art museum with works by El Greco, Tintoretto and 19th-century Catalan painters.
• Vilanova Carnival: the oldest in Catalonia (since 1770) and one of the most spectacular on the Mediterranean.
• Municipal market: the best place to buy local products, especially fish and cured meats.
• Seafront promenade: 5 km of seafront walkway, ideal for cycling or running.
